Breaking Rules in Tanzania

Reportaż po angielsku: trzy zasady bezpieczeństwa złamane w Tanzanii i to, czego nauczyły autora. Świetny materiał do nauki żywego angielskiego.

Three rules I knew — and broke anyway

Before travelling to Tanzania, I read every safety guide I could find. Do not trust strangers with your money. Do not stop in unfamiliar places. And above all: in Africa you cannot travel after dark. I knew the rules. Then, between the narrow alleys of Stone Town and the beaches of Nungwi, I broke all three.

This is the story of what happened when I did — and why, despite everything, I came home with warm memories rather than horror stories.

Rule one: never hand your money to a stranger

It started innocently in Stone Town. A friendly local offered to help us arrange something, and in a moment of misplaced trust I handed him our money. He smiled, promised to be right back — and disappeared into the maze of streets.

We waited. And waited. The lesson was as expensive as it was simple: no matter how charming your new acquaintance seems, your cash stays in your pocket. It is a rule for a reason, and I learned it the hard way within days of arriving.

Rule two: think twice before you stop

A few days later we were driving our rented car through the countryside when we decided to stop at a spice plantation. Within minutes, a group of men surrounded the vehicle. Nobody spoke much English, we spoke no Swahili, and the atmosphere grew tense fast.

In the end nothing bad happened — they wanted to sell us a tour, not to rob us. But sitting in that car, hearts pounding, we understood how quickly a spontaneous stop can turn into a situation you no longer control.

Rule three: never travel after dark

The biggest rule of all — in Africa you cannot travel after dark! — we broke on our way back to the coast. Night fell faster than we expected, and we found ourselves driving through a remote village long after sunset, headlights cutting through the darkness.

When we finally arrived and told the story, the villagers were genuinely astonished that nobody robbed us on the way there. Their surprise said more about the risk we had taken than any guidebook ever could.

What Tanzania taught me

We escaped every situation unharmed, and I owe much of that to the hospitality of ordinary Tanzanians — people who helped, warned and guided us far more often than anyone tried to take advantage of us.

Still, luck is not a travel strategy. Respect cultural differences, leave expensive clothes and jewellery at home, plan your journeys so they end before sunset, and follow the safety rules of the country you visit. Tanzania is a beautiful, welcoming place — and it rewards travellers who treat it with respect.
